SILVER SPUR RANCH (Wyoming and Northern Colorado)

Registered Charolais- The Silver Spur Ranch Charolais herd dates back to the 1950’s.  At that time, Ol Jim York managed the ranch and he incorporated many of the values that still hold true today for the Charolais herd… fertility, soundness and performance.   Much of today’s Silver Spur Charolais herd evolved from the DeBruycker cow herd in Montana. Our focus is to produce stout ended, deep, sound Charolais bulls that will add pounds while maintaining moderate birth weights and carcass value.  We expect our replacement females to calve as two year olds and be low input females.

Each year, we sell performance tested Charolais bulls through our Production Sale in April.  We also select a set herdsires for the Silver Spur Registered and Commercial herds.  Annually, Silver Spur Ranch markets or retains ownership of several thousand head of Charolais sired calves.    The retained ownership option enables us to recognize the genetic value of our sires in multiple segments of the beef industry.  By utilizing Silver Spur Charolais sires in each segment of our operation, we are able to provide our bull customers with genetics we can say are TRIED and PROVEN.

Registered Angus and Red Angus – Our goal for our Angus and Red Angus herds are to be a source for moderate framed, forage efficient, heavy muscled genetics with high altitude adaptability.  To some, these traits may seem antagonistic, but we believe we can build a herd to accomplish these goals.  Through disciplined selection and culling, we are confident the Silver Spur Angus herd will become known for practical and functional cattle.  At this time, the Angus herd supplies bulls to our commercial female replacement herds and bulls for our own use.

Range Fire Composites - The best of both worlds!  Our Range Fire composites are simply Charolais x Red Angus cross cattle.  We have found this cross to have appeal as replacement females, commercial bulls and as feeder cattle.  The Silver Spur Range Fire program is dedicated to establishing multiple generation cattle with known performance data.  We will market Range Fire bulls in our annual Production Sale and utilize females to build our “seedstock” and commercial herds.

Commercial Cattle Perhaps the most important segment of our cowherd is our commercial females!  The majority of the cow herd is comprised of Angus x Continental females.  These females are expected to survive the Wyoming/ Northern Colorado environmental challenges, altitude and sage brush country.   In this herd, we challenge the genetics from our seedstock herds and learn which lineages will survive and create the most profit opportunities in the cow herd, in the feedyard and on the rail.

SILVER SPUR RANCH KIOWA DIVISION (Central Colorado)

Registered Angus – This Angus herd provides Angus bulls for customers and for use at the main Silver Spur Ranch and the TO Ranch.  Similar to our Angus herd in Wyoming, our goal is to produce Angus seedstock with extra muscle, forage efficiency and carcass value.

Our recent addition of Red Angus females from Beckton Red Angus will serve as the foundation upon which we will build.  These females represent the type and kind of Red Angus females we believe will work for us and our customers…easy fleshing, thick, low maintenance. Annually, we will market Registered Angus bulls and females by private treaty.  These cattle will be evaluated for performance, soundness, fleshing ability, fertility and muscle.  Our intent is to market only cattle that meet a level of quality standards.  The remaining cattle will be fed / harvested to collect feedlot and carcass data.

Commercial Herd – Females who do not continually produce progeny that meet our seedstock standards are moved to our commercial herd.  Charolais bulls are utilized for a terminal cross in this herd.

SILVER SPUR TO RANCH (Northeastern New Mexico)

Commercial HerdAt the TO Ranch, the majority of the commercial cow herd functions a terminal supplier for our feeder calf and yearling operations.  A maternal oriented herd is maintained for replacement females.
